At first, I thought this was only an after-school study class but over the years I have discovered that it’s so much more. I’m so happy that the we’ve had the program for five years but I am sad to know that next year is the last year it will be here.
NLA partners have extensive experience with K-12 reform and college outreach programs, with connections to the state's network of 33 community and technical colleges, public and private 4-year universities.
It is through partnerships that great tasks are accomplished and NLA has been a creative partner to 70 buildings in 30 school districts, nine postsecondary institutions, the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, the federal Department of Education, key area foundations, and many community organizations and civic groups over our eleven year history. NLA’s co-Executive Directors, Barbara Peterson and Leroy Werkhoven bring a combined 60+ years experience working with state K-12 and postsecondary institutions.
NLA is closely affiliated with the Wapato Lions Club, Mexico in Wapato Program, and the Wapato Chamber of Commerce.
NLA has received funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, WSU Foundation and the Yakama Nation Legends Casino Foundation.
NLA is one of the 10 inaugural recipients of the new Washington State foundation, Washington STEM, in the category of Entrepreneurial Awards for a project that will involve middle and high school students from Highland and Quincy School Districts in a STEM project exploring alternative energy in central Washington state.
Leroy Werkhoven and Barbara Peterson, co-founders of NLA Group, have over 20 years of experience working with school districts in Washington state to develop strong curriculums, programs, and partnerships.
