A message from the 2007 Chamber president
Chambers of Commerce in small towns can be the bridges between city government, the schools, business and local service organizations. That is how I see my job as president of the Greater Wapato area Chamber of Commerce. The Wapato Chamber’s purpose is to promote business and agribusiness in the greater Wapato area. We are not bound by city limits or government spending requirements. This frees us up to be creative and truly inspire our business community to get excited about the future of the community. By working together, all the leaders in a small town can make a big difference. The leaders of the City Council, School administration, other non profit groups and the chamber of commerce must leave their egos at the door. I am extremely fortunate to be the president of the Wapato Chamber at time when all these groups in my community have come together for the greater good or common goal.
What is the greater good or common goal; it is to create a safe and healthy community vibrant with business activity, effective schools, safe neighborhoods and a hope for the future. This is a big order and it must be accomplished in steps. One new business, a new sidewalk, a Welcome to Wapato sign, a community festival, lighting of a Christmas tree, cleaning up a vacant lot, assisting new business get started, a school play, a local store hosting the high school football tailgate party These steps taken by the leaders in a community make a great community with hope for the future. Once a positive feeling is created it gains momentum. My job is to be the cheerleader and keep it positive. The growth in our small communities in the Yakima Valley never happens fast enough. We are re-creating ourselves to provide goods and services to the people that choose to live in a small town and we are working hard to join the tourist industry that Yakima Valley is destined for. The job of small town chamber president is fraught with challenge after challenge and never enough money but you couldn’t give me New York City. I will take a small town any day.
